Project summary:

For a variety of social and psychological reasons, elderly are likely to confront a variety of nutritional problems and actively seek dietary solutions through the purchase of appropriate products.

The main purpose of RODIONA project proposal is to address nutritional issues that affect the ageing process in the hope of improving the health and quality of life of the ageing population. A psychosociological, demographic and morbidity screening will be done in order to select a representative cohort of elderly and young subjects, divided into study groups. For each study group, the health status, needs and nutritional style in accordance with their economical status will be evaluated. In the same time, a complex investigation regarding the methylation metabolome and nutrigenomics at DNA level and the endogenous oxidative status will be done on a significantly number of representative cases in each group. The integration of results through elaboration of nutritional algorithms prototype will ensure the design of new food products, original, proper, which will be introduced in scientifically-based personalized dietary schemes, taking into account caloric, compositional and compliance aspects. The project proposes the design of two new cereal-based food products for elderly– for the first time in Romania- on the base of original recipes as a result of integration of bio-medical data and milk-based products testing. In this purpose, necessary bioresources will be identified and selected with a proper content in bioactive compounds. After the assessment of the new two food products through elderly ‘clinical, paraclinical and nutrigenomic-metabolomic tests as well as the assessment of data obtained through a compliance questionnaire, the production technology will be transferred to industry in order to produce the food products at convenient prices.
